Summary

The Departments of Ophthalmology and Psychiatry at University of Michigan have established a cross-cutting and interdisciplinary program of research, funded by several extramural and foundation awards, and headed by Kanishka Thiran Jayasundera and David M. Fresco, and are actively seeking applications for a post-doctoral research position. The ideal candidate we seek will be a clinical psychologist, with a doctoral degree, who is interested in a career in research, but has familiarity and expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy. The fellow will serve as an interventionist on a new NIH-funded clinical trial that will evaluate the efficacy of Emotion Regulation Therapy to resolve the distress caused by vision loss. Additional responsibilities include assisting with existing data collection efforts for clinical trial research, lab-management, manuscript preparation, grant development, and developing their own lines of inquiry.

The position entails working within a large, multi-disciplinary team comprised of psychiatry and ophthalmology faculty, grad and undergrad students, post-docs, ophthalmologists, genetic counselors, and staff, to help the fellow build skills necessary for a successful research career. In particular, the fellow will play a crucial role in supporting vision patients enrolled in program studies, which may include conducting individual therapy sessions, administering standardized assessments, and closely collaborating with the research team.

The fellowship also provides specialized training in Emotion Regulation Therapy, with opportunities for supervised clinical hours towards licensure, as well as various departmental and university-wide professional development opportunities.

This position spans a minimum of two years, though renewal of annual appointments is dependent upon performance. The salary aligns with current NIH post-doctoral training levels and includes health insurance, as well as a stipend for professional travel and research materials.
