City of Carmel Urban Forestry Specialist in Carmel, Indiana

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to perform manual and specialized work functions to assist in developing and implementing the Citys urban forestry program.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs various manual tasks associated with forestry activities, which may include tree pruning, removal, watering, mulching, planting, and pest control.
  • Monitors tree plantings, removals, pruning and other maintenance in City right-of-way.
  • Inspects urban forestry and landscape maintenance contracts, including tree planting, removal and pruning.
  • Assists with urban forestry programs, committees, and activities, including the Carmel Urban Forestry Committee, Arbor Day events and seasonal projects.
  • Maintains inventory of trees in City right-of-way.
  • Provides training to volunteers on landscape maintenance procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to compile, review, classify, prioritize, and analyze data.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and design data and information.
  • Ability to read and interpret various construction plans and planting plans for projects of all types.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in identifying and selecting from alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on an individual or group basis; includes ability to speak and write clearly and to interact with City employees and members of the public to exchange information and resolve problems.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database management, GIS, mapping, design, and other software applications.
  • Ability to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with tree inspection/maintenance operations, including a heavy-duty truck, water tank equipment, wood chipper, measuring tape and caliper, chain saw, hand saw, pruner, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, smoke, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances, insects, and wildlife.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work duties.
Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Associate degree in forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture or related field.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience that involves tree and shrub identification, tree maintenance and personal computer operations.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Maintains professional certification as Arborist or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana drivers license.
